About Grade 8 at the online school

Learning has picked up pace, and Grade 8 students in the online program have moved from an introduction to specific subjects to studying them in depth. Now they are dealing with knowledge that is important for specialists — it is the information from these semesters that forms the basis of faculties in higher education institutions:

  • higher mathematics is based on knowledge of algebra;
  • human biology is the introduction to medical specialties;
  • political science is based on geography and history.

Therefore, how a student spends this year directly affects their future admission.

Advantages of distance learning in 8th grade at AP School

    Gradual increase in workload

Methodologists create adapted transitional lessons that connect to the previous topic, making it easier for students to understand the essence of the new material.

    Applied learning

The older the grade, the more examples of how topics are applied. Open lessons with practicing lecturers are popular at our school.

    Demonstration

We accompany reading with documentary series — this is especially relevant for history and literature.

    Preparation for 9th grade

Next year, many students will leave school, so we are introducing career guidance as early as 8th grade to help them make informed choices about their future.

How online lessons are conducted in 8th grade

    What the lessons consist of

    Theoretical part
Instead of PowerPoint presentations and traditional broadcasting, we use Close to You-style lessons: smart boards, 3D models for demonstrations, and educational series.

    Practical part
Tasks on the online platform: logic and attention games, career simulators, project work, local competitions, and results rankings.

How much time do we invest in learning

    Shift learning
    1st shift: from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00–3:00 p.m.
    2nd shift: from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00–6:00 p.m.

    Classic duration
    Lesson: 45 minutes
Breaks: short (10 minutes) and 1 long (30 minutes).

    How lessons are conducted

    Lessons with a teacher
We explore new topics, work in teams, participate in project tasks, and test ourselves. Everything takes place under the guidance of a teacher.

    Homework
On weekdays, it takes up to 2.5 hours.
On weekends, it’s mostly rest, and teachers only give assignments when students are covering complex, extensive topics.

Advice from AP School teachers for parents of eighth graders

We have developed online learning for eighth graders not only to make teenagers comfortable. By saving time and other expenses, it opens up new opportunities for students. And with the help of parents, there will be even more.

    Let’s give them more autonomy

Teenagers aged 13–14 are already quite capable of taking responsibility for their homework. So there is no need to intervene or help unless absolutely necessary.

Teach them to distinguish between studying and hobbies

Our high school’s approach is to make learning interesting and somewhat akin to leisure, without replacing it. To balance their efforts, people need this counterbalance: rest and work.

    Communicate and understand

Some people study for 11 years, while others only need 9. Ask your child how they see their future and see if they show interest in anything in particular.

Frequently asked questions about studying at an online school, 8th grade

How much independent work is there in 8th grade?

In 8th grade, the amount of independent work increases compared to previous years. Students are more involved in projects, research, and analytical tasks—the purpose of these tasks is to prepare them for high school, so they are more complex and require more time and resources. Sometimes homework takes more than 2 hours.

How does the assessment system change in online learning for 8th grade?

The assessment system becomes more comprehensive. It takes into account not only knowledge but also class participation, project work, practical tasks, and communication skills. In other words, understanding and applying knowledge is now more important than just memorization. The scoring system remains the same.

What is more difficult in 8th grade compared to previous years?

The material is more in-depth. The exact and natural sciences (algebra, geometry, physics, chemistry) are particularly difficult, and in the humanities, there is a growing need for abstract thinking and analysis of large amounts of information.

Do eighth graders need more time to prepare for their subjects?

Eighth graders need to prepare more for their classes than in previous years. Since independent learning depends entirely on the student, it can be assumed to take more time, though this depends on the student.
