How to prepare for the NMT in mathematics in 2026

Recently, mathematics has become compulsory for everyone, regardless of their field of study. 12.8% of participants did not pass the threshold score in the mathematics section of the 2024 NMT. This is the highest rate among all subjects.

What is the reason?

  • Low quality of school teaching materials.
  • Outdated and irrelevant methods.
    • Insufficient teacher qualifications.
    • The exam was taken by students majoring in the humanities, for whom mathematics is not a core subject.

But there is also good news. Mathematics ranked first among the compulsory subjects in terms of the number of students who scored 200 points in this section — 1,131 students achieved this mark.

How to build an effective preparation strategy

    1. Regardless of how you assess your readiness, test it on a demo test or on samples from previous years.

    2. Identify the most difficult questions for you and try to work on them or ask someone to help you improve your knowledge.

    3. Make a plan – calculate the time and effort required. Preparation does not have to be exhausting, because the secret to success is sticking to this plan.

    4. Practice using proven methods. A pretty good option is modern resources, which are abundant on the internet today.

    5. Stick to your plan and don’t forget about the psychological part of preparation (anxiety, rest, and mood) — if your tutor provides this, then they are a good tutor.

How not to burn out during intensive preparation

One of the common reasons why applicants fail the exam is a lack of psychological preparation. Insufficient rest, tension, and the burden of responsibility can negate months of intensive work. How can this be avoided?

    Rest

Alternate your efforts according to a schedule: today work, tomorrow a walk, hobbies, friends, sports – anything that distracts your brain. Your memory will thank you.

    Stress

Don’t get carried away – if you make the same mistake again, put the task aside. Analyze it later, and you will see the magic.

    Responsibility

Yes, the NMT is worth focusing on, but it is just a tool in your hands. Prepare not because your future depends on the exam, but because your future depends on you.

    Tutor

Mental health is more important than any exam, so a good teacher puts it first.

Preparation with a teacher: why does it work?

    Preparation plan

    On your own
You can create a plan based on your own feelings and simple calculations; even AI can help with this. An important detail: there is a chance of a high result if the student has studied diligently throughout all grades.

    With a tutor
The teacher sees the whole picture and gives an objective assessment, because they have experience. If there is no solid foundation—a plan—then everything is in vain, so you need to be confident in it.

    Discipline

    Without help
Being disciplined means allocating your time and effort correctly, not sitting over your notebook at night when your eyes are closing. It is a balance between study and rest, which is not easy to achieve on your own.

    Under control
A good tutor will tell you when to study harder and when to take a break. This will help you set the pace.

    Analysis and verification

    On your own
You need to search for the right answers, find resources, and spend precious time looking for tools.

    With hints
Instant feedback. Over time, students often know they have made a mistake before even asking the teacher, if the teacher is nearby.

Frequently asked questions about the math section of the NMT

How to avoid common mistakes on the test?

This requires practice. It also requires the development of attentiveness, which is often underestimated and ignored, which is why “obvious” and typical mistakes happen every year. You also need to analyze your work. And correct mistakes during preparation so that you don’t have to remember them after the test.

When is it recommended to start preparing for the NMT in mathematics?

It is always recommended to start preparing for the NMT in advance. Prudent students or parents often turn to a tutor 1 or 1.5 years in advance, but current opportunities, such as the online format, significantly reduce the preparation time, as this format saves time on travel and provides more flexible functionality. Therefore, we tend to favor the option of 1 year or less.

What is a good score in mathematics?

In a pragmatic situation, such as admission, a “good score” is a relative term. There is a maximum score for the mathematics section, which is 32 points, the minimum threshold is 5 points, and a good result is the one the student hoped for when taking the test. Applicants should determine how much is required for admission during the admission campaign.
