How to prepare for the Ukrainian language NMT in 2026

Every year, the Ukrainian language is the first compulsory subject in both the ZNO and NMT, and no one questions its relevance. The exam is required for all universities in Ukraine, for all faculties and specialties. Data for 2025:

Results

The percentage of students who failed the exam is quite small – 0.4%.

Difficulty

The average score of applicants in the Ukrainian language section was 146.8 – the highest among the compulsory subjects.

Top scorers

606 participants managed to score 200 points in this section.

Preparation

One of the easiest: just learn the theory, practice the exercises, and pay attention — no formulas or dates, everything is intuitively familiar, you just need to memorize and understand.

What does the Ukrainian language test on the NMT contain?

Structure

A total of 30 tasks, 25 – choosing 1 correct answer for 1 point, and 5 for matching tasks for 1–4 points. The maximum possible score is 45 points.

Time

The Ukrainian language is included in the first part of the test along with mathematics. This part takes 120 minutes and is divided into 2 blocks, so 60 minutes are allocated to the Ukrainian language.

Topics

Phonetics, graphics, orthoepy, orthography. Lexicology, phraseology, word structure, word formation, morphology, syntax.

Features

There are 2 more topics: stylistics and speech development. Less attention is paid to them because in order to fully assess them, open-ended questions are needed, which are not available in the online format.

Key updates

Starting in 2024, Ukrainian language exams will take into account the 2019 spelling rules.

Step-by-step preparation strategy

Goal

  • Objectively determine the range of scores you are aiming for
  • Ask your teacher or tutor for advice on this
  • Make a preparation plan, taking into account your target scores

Schedule

  • Make a class schedule, just like at school
  • Find a place for both studying and relaxing
  • Stick to it, because if you miss one day, you will have to do twice as much work the next day

Practice

  • Practice using available resources
  • The most effective approach is to create conditions similar to those of a real multi-subject test
  • Build up your pace gradually; there is no need to do everything at once

Work on your mistakes

  • Devote most of your time to this point
  • Make as many mistakes as possible — this is the number one tip for preparation
  • Don’t view mistakes as something negative, because they are the steps to a high result

How not to burn out during intensive preparation

Classes

  • No less than 40 minutes
  • No more — as desired
  • Theory: 1 class — 1 topic

Day

  • Work day – 1 lesson
  • Day off – review/reinforcement for at least 15–20 minutes
  • Alternate breaks: 1 hour of study – 20–30 minutes of rest

Week

  • 1 subject: 2–3 work days
  • Rest: at least 2 days
  • Alternate test subjects

Month

  • Work through a few topics, but thoroughly
  • Create a plan so that each month brings you closer to the result
  • Several times a month, do control checks on trial tests

Rest and review

  • Take extra days off if necessary
  • Watch your diet and sleep
  • On weekends, distract yourself and try not to think about preparation

Instant feedback
Over time, students often know they have made a mistake without even asking the teacher.

Where to find useful materials for preparing for the NMT?

Ukrainian Center for Educational Quality Assessment

Platforms: EdEra, Vseosvita, EDUGET, and others

Where to get comprehensive training with teacher support

Applicants often prepare with tutors because they help optimize efforts and resources. This is not a transfer of responsibility for the result, but qualified assistance – a balance of various factors that lead to high scores.

AP School teachers help students find it. They provide comprehensive preparation: they reinforce knowledge, take it to a new level, maintain mental and physical health, and set students up for a positive result.

Frequently asked questions about preparing for the NMT

How much time is needed to effectively prepare for the Ukrainian language NMT?

This is calculated individually. Some people need to prepare for almost a year to remember the entire 5th grade curriculum, while others take a few practice tests and pass with flying colors. So, the average time is six months (for the Ukrainian language section).

What topics must be studied to successfully pass the NMT in Ukrainian?

All topics listed by the UCEQA. The list includes phonetics, graphics, orthoepy, orthography, lexicology, phraseology, word structure, word formation, morphology, syntax, stylistics, and speech development.

Is it possible to prepare for the Ukrainian language NMT online?

Yes, the online format gives excellent results in preparation. We specialize in this form of training and have prepared several thousand students for international language exams. This format allows for interactive learning in such an academically “dry” area as exam preparation.

When should you start preparing for the Ukrainian language NMT?

It is worth thinking about this in advance. Previously, students turned to tutors 1–1.5 years before the exam, but modern online formats reduce this period: they are more convenient, do not require travel time, and allow you to plan your studies effectively. Therefore, we consider the optimal start of preparation to be six months or earlier.
